Recently, US Micro LED solution provider Compound Photonics (CP) announced a partnership with US semiconductor foundry GLOBALFOUNDRIES (GF). CP will produce IntelliPix backplane products on GF's 22FDX professional semiconductor platform.

Public information shows that GF is located in Santa Clara, CA, USA, and is currently the world's third largest professional wafer foundry, second only to TSMC and Samsung.

In 2020, CP announced the development of high-performance IntelliPix Micro LED micro-display backplane drive technology, which is suitable for solutions with a resolution of 2048x2048 and above and a pixel pitch of 1.5 microns or more.

The IntelliPix platform is based on CP's on-demand pixel technology. This technology can focus only on the changing pixels and is very intelligent. It can save the power consumption of the pixel area in the non-working state and improve the image quality. The new backplane based on GF's high-performance, ultra-low-power 22FDX platform can achieve high refresh rate, low latency, and low power consumption.

It is worth mentioning that in addition to GF, CP also strategically unites Plessey and equipment manufacturer Axus to jointly promote the development of the next generation of Micro LED displays for AR smart devices.

In addition, at the end of last year, CP opened its Micro LED manufacturing plant MiAC (MicroLED Innovation Acceleration Center) in Chadler, Arizona, USA. The plant is dedicated to accelerating the time to market of monolithic integrated Micro LED displays below 5μm.

Next, with the help of professional foundries, the development process of CP will speed up again. According to its disclosure, the first commercial product based on Micro LED micro-display backplane is expected to be on the market in 2023.
